RESTORED ART CASE STEINWAY MODEL B IN RARE CIRCASSIAN WALNUT
The Steinway & Sons Model B Grand Piano is one of the most legendary makes of piano ever crafted. It was this style of instrument that entertained First Class passengers onboard the R.M.S. Titanic and continue today as the preferred practice piano of countless amateur and professional musicians. Steinway & Sons Model B #124817 stands among the most stunning instruments we have ever had the chance to rebuild here at Chupp’s Piano Service. This particular piano was selected for restoration by a client and we are proud to be able to provide them with this musical piece of art.THE PIANO RESTORATION PROCESS
The restoration and rebuilding of a piano’s action is one of the most essential parts of any piano rebuilding project. New hammers, shanks, and flanges along with new Renner wippens (repetitions) were installed in the action. New keytops were installed and the ebony sharps carefully restored. The keyset was weighed-off for the proper down and up weight. Expert action and tone regulation were conducted to ensure the finest response and a full, concert-level quality of tone. We spend many extra hours in this process to ensure that the piano does not just look like a fine instrument, but performs as one as well.
A new fitted spruce soundboard was installed into the belly of this piano. Along with a custom fabricated pinblock, this ensures the highest possible quality of tone and sustainability. New blued tuning pins are then driven into the hard maple pinblock and the finest Mapes wire and GC copper wound bass strings were coiled and brought to pitch. We were very pleased with the end result of this restoration. The piano boasts a silky smooth action that is light and responsive. The piano’s tone is rich and full with a powerful bass that outclasses many other Model B Grands from this era.
The Cabinet
The piano’s cabinet is in a fairly standard design and aside from a few details is identical to the cabinets being built today. What sets this piano apart aesthetically is the rare wood used to veneer the cabinet. Circassian Walnut encases the entire piano. This rare, highly detailed wood is absolutely stunning and it is easy to get lost in its swirling grain and three-dimensional appearance. The cabinet was refinished in a premium closed pore, hand rubbed satin finish and the original brass hardware was polished and sealed. This extensive repair and refinishing process required hundreds of hours of labor.
