The Steinway Model A Family
Steinway & Sons Model A Grand Pianos measure over 6′ in length. This family of parlor grand pianos was first introduced in 1878 and continues to be built by both the New York and Hamburg Steinway factories.
These beautiful grand pianos feature a sound full of power and a robust tonal output that has all the rich layers expected of a piano bearing the name ‘Steinway.’ The innovative Steinway scale design is evident here and the sound quality is deep and roaring in the bass and equally delicate in the treble. The action produces a responsive, effortless feel that bears evidence of the craftsmanship of the Steinway designers. The Model A was not built in New York for much of the 1900s with production continuing in Hamburg. The Model A2 was recently reintroduced in 2005.
There are some key differences to note within this family of pianos. Model A-3 Grand Pianos are larger than the rest of the Model A family. We have found many of our restored Model A-3 Steinway Grands to be very comparable in tone and touch quality to Model B grand pianos thanks to its incredibly advanced scale design. Steinway Model A grand pianos occupy an important position within the family of Steinway instruments.
The size of this piano allows it to produce a rich, warm and deep bass while still being small enough to fit easily into almost any home or concert setting. Many hold up the Model A-3’s scale design as their favorite out of all of Steinway’s line of instruments. The slightly smaller Model A-1 and A-2 grand pianos are both fine instruments as well, with each piano having its own inherent characteristics that make them a pleasure to play and experience. The 6’2″ Model A-2 is the piano that Steinway New York chose to re-introduce in 2005.

“…its power and volume of tone, while of delicious quality, is fully equal to our large Concert Grands made up to the year of 1875.” – William Steinway on the introduction of the Model A Grand Piano
“A while ago we decided to try an experiment. We lined up several of our restored Model A-III and Model B grand pianos and covered the model letter and serial number. A concert pianist played these instruments for hours and afterward she noted she would ‘love any one of those Steinway Model Bs.’ The Model A-III truly is a unique and powerful piano!” – Dennis Chupp
